Transformatorët, or transformers in English, are electrical devices that transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. Their primary function is to change the voltage of an alternating current (AC) supply. This is achieved by using two coils of wire, known as windings, wound around a common ferromagnetic core. When an alternating current flows through the primary winding, it creates a changing magnetic field in the core. This changing magnetic field then induces an alternating voltage in the secondary winding.

The ratio of the number of turns in the primary winding to the number of turns in the secondary winding determines whether the transformer steps up or steps down the voltage. If the secondary winding has more turns than the primary, the voltage is stepped up, increasing it. Conversely, if the secondary winding has fewer turns, the voltage is stepped down, decreasing it. This ability to efficiently alter voltage levels is crucial for power distribution systems, allowing electricity to be transmitted at high voltages over long distances to minimize energy loss, and then stepped down to safer, usable voltages for homes and businesses. Transformers are also used in various electronic devices for impedance matching and electrical isolation. They operate based on Faraday's law of induction and are essential components in modern electrical infrastructure.
