Transepts are architectural elements found in churches and cathedrals, particularly in Romanesque and Gothic styles. They are essentially transverse or cross-shaped naves that intersect the main longitudinal nave at a right angle. This intersection creates a cruciform (cross-shaped) floor plan, a defining characteristic of many religious buildings.

The transept typically extends outwards from the nave on both the north and south sides, forming the arms of the cross. The point where the transept and the nave meet is known as the crossing. Above the crossing, a tower or dome is often situated. The transept serves to increase the internal space of the church and can house additional chapels, altars, or choir stalls. It also provides a visual emphasis on the cruciform symbolism, representing the cross upon which Christ was crucified. The length and prominence of the transept arms can vary significantly between different buildings, contributing to the overall architectural character and proportion of the church.
