Tracheostomian is a term occasionally used to describe a person who has a tracheostomy, meaning they have a tracheostomy tube in place or a stoma in the neck connected to the trachea. The term is not common in formal medical writing; most sources refer to a "tracheostomy patient" or a person "with a tracheostomy."

A tracheostomy is a surgically created opening through the neck into the trachea to establish an airway. It is performed to bypass an upper airway obstruction, to provide long-term ventilation support, or to protect the airway in patients who cannot reliably swallow or clear secretions. Tracheostomy tubes can be cuffed or uncuffed and may be standard, inner cannula, or fenestrated; some units use speaking valves to aid voice.

Care for a tracheostomian focuses on maintaining airway patency and preventing infection. Routine stoma care includes cleaning around the opening, keeping the tube and inner cannula clean, humidified air, and suctioning as needed. Patients are monitored for signs of blockage, bleeding, infection, or tube dislodgement. Changes to the tube are done by trained personnel; decannulation is considered when the patient can breathe safely through the natural airway and tolerate removal of the tube.

Communication, nutrition, and quality of life considerations are addressed by a multidisciplinary team, including respiratory therapists, nurses, physicians, and speech-language pathologists. The term "tracheostomian" should be used sparingly, with preference for clearer phrases like "person with a tracheostomy."
