Torppiu is a term that refers to a small croft or holding, typically found in historical Finnish and Swedish rural settings. These were small, rented plots of land, often located on the edge of a larger estate or farm, and were worked by tenant farmers known as torppari. The torppari would typically pay rent to the landowner in the form of labor, produce, or a combination of both.

The torppariu system was a significant part of the social and economic structure in Finland and Sweden for centuries, particularly from the 17th century up until the early 20th century. It provided a means of livelihood for many landless or near-landless families, allowing them to cultivate land and sustain themselves. However, the system also involved a degree of dependency on the landowner and could be subject to various terms and conditions.

Over time, the torppariu system evolved. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were significant land reforms in Finland that aimed to break up large estates and give torppari the opportunity to purchase their rented land, thus becoming independent landowners. This process, known as the torpparilaki or crofter laws, marked a major shift in Finnish land ownership and social structure, gradually diminishing the prevalence of the torppariu system. Today, the term often evokes a sense of historical rural life.
