Toiduvõrk, often translated as food web, is a graphical representation of the feeding connections within an ecological community. It illustrates how energy is transferred from one organism to another through consumption. Unlike a simpler food chain that shows a single linear pathway of energy flow, a food web depicts the complex, interconnected relationships where most organisms consume multiple types of food and are preyed upon by multiple predators.

The base of most food webs consists of producers, primarily plants and algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, which are herbivores. Primary consumers are in turn eaten by secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores. Tertiary consumers are at a higher trophic level, feeding on secondary consumers, and so on. Detritivores and decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning nutrients to the ecosystem that can then be used by producers.

Understanding food webs is essential for studying ecosystem dynamics, stability, and resilience. Changes in the population of one species can have cascading effects throughout the entire food web, impacting many other organisms. For instance, the removal of a top predator or a significant decline in a primary producer can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. Scientists use food webs to model the impact of environmental changes, species introductions, or extinctions.
