Tobacco production refers to the cultivation, processing, and preparation of tobacco plants (*Nicotiana tabacum*) for commercial use, primarily in the manufacture of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and other tobacco products. Tobacco is an annual herbaceous plant native to the Americas, domesticated by indigenous peoples for centuries before its global dissemination during European colonization.

The primary varieties of tobacco used commercially include burley, flue-cured (bright leaf), oriental, and Maryland. These varieties differ in flavor, aroma, and processing requirements. Tobacco plants are typically grown in warm climates with well-drained soil and require consistent watering. Harvesting occurs when the leaves reach optimal maturity, usually after 12–18 weeks of growth, depending on the variety. Leaves are then cured through processes such as air-curing, fire-curing, or flue-curing to preserve moisture and develop flavor.

After curing, tobacco leaves undergo further processing, including fermentation, drying, and sometimes blending with other tobaccos. The processed leaves are then cut, shredded, or rolled into various forms for manufacturing. Tobacco production remains a significant agricultural activity in countries such as the United States, China, Brazil, India, and Turkey, contributing to both local economies and global trade.

However, tobacco production is associated with numerous health risks due to its addictive properties and link to diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As a result, many governments impose strict regulations on tobacco farming, marketing, and consumption, including advertising bans, age restrictions, and health warnings. The industry also faces increasing scrutiny over labor practices, environmental impact, and efforts to reduce youth smoking.
