Tintdeplock is a control technique used in electrochromic glazing systems to stabilize the optical state of a tinted layer by temporarily locking the device’s depolarization dynamics when disturbances threaten color accuracy. The term combines tint with depolarization lock, reflecting its core function: to prevent unwanted changes in transmittance caused by transient voltage spikes, temperature shifts, or aging.

The mechanism relies on a closed-loop sensor suite that monitors transmittance, voltage, and sometimes ionic movement indicators. When a drift beyond a predefined threshold is detected, the controller implements a lock sequence that holds the electrochromic stack in its current state for a brief, configurable period, using a protective bias or a short stabilization bias to arrest further ionic motion. A memory element retains the state until normal operation resumes.

Advantages include improved color stability, reduced visual artifacts during transient conditions, and more predictable performance in dynamic environments. Disadvantages include added circuit complexity, potential energy overhead during the locked phase, and a possibility of slower reset when the lock is released.

Tintdeplock is employed in smart glazing for architectural, automotive, and aerospace applications, particularly where rapid environmental changes challenge color fidelity. It is compatible with various electrochromic chemistries but requires careful integration with driver electronics and safety standards.
