tinapronssi

Tinapronssi, or tin bronze, is a copper-tin alloy widely used in engineering and art. It commonly contains 8-12% tin, with the remainder copper. Tin strengthens copper, increasing hardness and wear resistance while preserving ductility. It also provides good corrosion resistance, including to marine environments.

Manufacture and structure: The alloy is produced by melting copper and adding tin. At typical compositions, a copper-tin solid solution forms the beta phase, which gives a balance of strength and toughness. Increasing tin makes the alloy harder and more brittle, so grades are chosen for specific properties.

History and usage: Tin bronze has ancient origins with the Bronze Age; it remains in use today for bushings, gears, bearings, valves, fittings, and sculpture. Its wear resistance and machinability make it a preferred material for bearings and wear parts, though it can be more difficult to machine than some alternatives.

Variants: Specialized grades with higher tin contents exist for greater hardness, while other alloys add elements to improve machinability or corrosion resistance.
