TheShot is a digital media portfolio website created in 2004 by five University of Southern California film students. The five founders, Omar Abu Itesa, Grant Heslov, Alex Fabbri, Liz Destro and Fred Beacham, were inspired by the site's precursor, which was a dial-up based portfolio site created as a campus project.

The website features a range of user-generated content including scripts, storyboards, screenplays, films, showreels and other media. Users can essentially upload various media formats, contributing to an ever-growing collection of user-generated content.

In the 2000s, the website's concept gained traction. TheShot's social features, such as ratings and comments, added a layer of community to the site. The platform also allowed users to interact with and view work from other users. TheShot's growth and popularity among the film and media industries cannot be overstated, as the site expanded rapidly and remained a platform for users hoping to be seen.

Recognizing the need to monitor content for authenticity, TheShot strictly maintains an operational guideline that prohibits plagiarism, violence, and unverified or false information. Adherence to these ground rules resonates strongly with the public.

The platform experienced significant development and reached millions of users. The user base expanded rapidly. By the mid-2000s, TheShot became a significant global platform for aspiring filmmakers, now even hosting workshops and forums to share expertise and supportive advice.

Though the popularity of TheShot led to it being targeted for copyright infringement, the owners ultimately maintained their platform's empowering stance.
