Testauskielto, also known as a test ban, refers to a policy or agreement that prohibits the testing of nuclear weapons. The concept emerged in the mid-20th century as a means to reduce the risk of nuclear war and promote disarmament. The first test ban treaty, signed in 1963, prohibited nuclear weapon tests in the atmosphere, underwater, and in outer space. However, it allowed for underground tests, which led to the development of more sophisticated and secretive testing methods.

The Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, signed in 1963, was the first multilateral treaty banning nuclear testing. It was followed by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in 1996, which aimed to prohibit all nuclear testing. However, the CTBT has not entered into force due to the lack of ratification by several nuclear powers, including the United States, China, and India.

Testauskielto has been a subject of debate and controversy. Proponents argue that it is a crucial step towards nuclear disarmament and the prevention of nuclear war. Critics, however, contend that it has not been effective in reducing nuclear proliferation and that it has not been fully implemented. The issue remains a significant challenge in international relations and nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
