Tertpentanol, also known as tert-amyl alcohol or 2-methylbutan-2-ol, is a tertiary alcohol with the chemical formula C5H12O. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature and has a characteristic camphor-like odor. Tertpentanol is isomeric with other pentanols, differing in the arrangement of its carbon atoms. Tertpentanol is produced industrially through the hydration of 2-methylbut-2-ene, which is derived from the cracking of petroleum. It can also be synthesized by the Grignard reaction between acetone and ethylmagnesium bromide, followed by hydrolysis.

Historically, tertpentanol was used as a sedative and hypnotic, similar to other short-chain alcohols. However, due to its potential for abuse and toxicity, its medicinal use has largely been discontinued and replaced by safer alternatives. Today, its primary applications are in chemical synthesis. It serves as a solvent for various organic reactions and is a precursor in the production of other chemicals, including perfumes and pharmaceuticals.
