Terpenoids are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, primarily derived from isoprene units. Beyond their role in plant scent and flavor, terpenoids have significant biological activities. Many possess medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and even anticancer effects. For example, paclitaxel (Taxol), a diterpenoid derived from the Pacific yew tree, is a widely used chemotherapy drug. The structural diversity of terpenoids allows for a wide range of interactions with biological systems, making them a rich area of study in natural product chemistry and pharmacology. Their industrial applications extend to fragrances, flavors, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels.
