Termogenezi is the process by which living organisms produce heat. This heat generation is crucial for maintaining body temperature, especially in endotherms like mammals and birds, which are capable of regulating their internal temperature independently of the external environment. There are two primary types of thermogenesis: regulated and non-regulated.

Non-regulated thermogenesis is a byproduct of normal metabolic processes. Any chemical reaction that releases energy, such as the breakdown of nutrients for energy, inevitably produces heat as a consequence. This basal heat production is essential for sustaining life functions.

Regulated thermogenesis, on the other hand, is a process actively controlled by the organism to increase heat production when needed, such as in response to cold exposure or increased energy demands. A key mechanism of regulated thermogenesis is shivering thermogenesis, which involves involuntary muscle contractions that generate heat. Another important mechanism is non-shivering thermogenesis, primarily occurring in brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT contains a specialized protein called uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), which allows protons to flow across the mitochondrial membrane without generating ATP, thereby releasing energy as heat. Hormones like thyroid hormones and catecholamines can also stimulate metabolic rate and thus increase heat production.

The balance between heat production and heat loss is vital for thermoregulation. When environmental temperatures drop, organisms may increase thermogenesis to counteract heat loss and maintain a stable core body temperature. Conversely, in hot environments, thermogenesis may be reduced, and heat loss mechanisms like sweating and vasodilation become dominant.
