Templerne refers to the Knights Templar, a Catholic military order founded around 1119. Officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, the order was established to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem after the First Crusade. They quickly gained significant wealth and influence, becoming one of the most powerful military orders in Christendom.

The Templars played a crucial role in the Crusades, defending strategic locations and engaging in combat. Beyond their military duties, they also developed a sophisticated financial system, acting as bankers and managing vast estates across Europe and the Holy Land. Their distinctive white mantles with a red cross became a symbol of their authority and piety.

However, their immense power and wealth eventually attracted envy and suspicion. In 1307, King Philip IV of France, heavily indebted to the order, initiated a crackdown. The Templars were arrested on charges of heresy, blasphemy, and other offenses, often extracted under torture. Despite their denials, the order was suppressed by Pope Clement V in 1312. Many Templars were executed, and their assets were largely confiscated and transferred to other orders, most notably the Knights Hospitaller. The rapid rise and dramatic fall of the Knights Templar have made them a subject of enduring fascination and numerous legends.
