Tellemodellering, or counting modeling, is a statistical technique used to model count data. Count data are non-negative integers, such as the number of accidents, the number of customers, or the number of defects. Traditional linear regression models are not suitable for count data because they assume a continuous response variable and can produce negative predicted values, which are nonsensical for counts.

Tellemodellering addresses these limitations by using models that are specifically designed for discrete, non-negative outcomes. The most common type of tellemodellering is Poisson regression. The Poisson distribution assumes that the mean and variance of the count are equal. Another widely used model is the negative binomial regression, which is more flexible as it allows for overdispersion, meaning the variance is greater than the mean.

The process of tellemodellering involves fitting a model to the observed count data and then using the model to understand the relationship between predictor variables and the count outcome, or to predict future counts. The interpretation of coefficients in these models often relates to the log of the expected count or the rate of occurrence. Tellemodellering finds applications in various fields, including public health (e.g., modeling disease incidence), economics (e.g., predicting sales volume), and environmental science (e.g., analyzing species abundance). The choice between different tellemodellering approaches depends on the characteristics of the data and the research question.
