Televisio, often shortened to TV, is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting sound and moving images in a series of frames, making it a form of broadcast television. The word "television" is a hybrid derived from the Greek word tele (meaning "distant") and the Latin word visio (meaning "vision"). Television became a mass medium for news, entertainment, and advertising in the development stages during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

The first public television broadcasts began in 1928 in the United States and 1936 in Great Britain. By the mid-20th century, television had become a dominant form of media in many parts of the world. Early television sets were bulky and expensive, but advancements in technology led to smaller, more affordable, and higher-quality displays.
