This practice has historical roots in rural Estonia and was particularly common before the widespread adoption of modern labor practices. Teenistus typically involved young people, often teenagers, working on farms or in households to gain experience and support their education or personal development.

The arrangement usually lasted for a few months to a year, during which the teenistaja (the person providing the service) performed various tasks such as farming, household chores, or other manual labor. In return, they received accommodation, meals, and sometimes a small stipend. This system was not only beneficial for the host families, who gained additional labor, but also for the teenistaja, who could learn practical skills, improve their language proficiency, and experience Estonian rural life firsthand.

Teenistus was particularly popular among students from urban areas or other countries who sought to immerse themselves in Estonian culture.
