A rectifier is an electrical component or circuit that converts alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, into direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction. This conversion is essential for powering many electronic devices that require a stable DC voltage.

The most basic rectifier is a diode, a semiconductor device that allows current to flow primarily in one direction. In its simplest form, a half-wave rectifier uses a single diode to pass only one half of the AC waveform, resulting in a pulsating DC output. A full-wave rectifier utilizes multiple diodes, typically in a bridge configuration, to utilize both halves of the AC waveform, producing a more continuous and efficient DC output. This configuration involves four diodes arranged to effectively "flip" the negative half of the AC cycle so it also flows in the positive direction.

Rectifiers are fundamental building blocks in power supplies for virtually all electronic equipment, from small consumer gadgets to large industrial machinery. They are also found in battery chargers, welding equipment, and in the transmission of electrical power. The output of a rectifier is often further processed by filters, such as capacitors, to smooth out the pulsations and produce a cleaner, more stable DC voltage closer to what is required by sensitive electronic circuits.
