Taunøytrinoet, also known as the tau neutrino, is an elementary particle that belongs to the lepton family. It is the third and most massive type of neutrino, alongside the electron neutrino and the muon neutrino. Like all neutrinos, the tau neutrino has a very small mass and no electric charge. These properties make them extremely difficult to detect, as they interact very weakly with other matter.

The tau neutrino is the antiparticle of the tau antineutrino. It is produced in certain types of radioactive decay and in high-energy particle collisions. The tau neutrino is closely associated with the tau lepton, a heavier charged lepton. When a tau lepton decays, it can produce a tau neutrino or tau antineutrino.

The existence of the tau neutrino was predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics and was experimentally confirmed in 2000 at Fermilab. This discovery completed the set of known fundamental particles in the Standard Model. Studying neutrinos, including the tau neutrino, is important for understanding the fundamental forces of nature, the evolution of the universe, and phenomena like supernova explosions. Their tiny mass also has implications for cosmology.
