Tasasähköllä refers to the Finnish term for direct current (DC) electricity. Unlike alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, DC electricity flows in a single, constant direction. This fundamental difference impacts its generation, transmission, and applications.

Direct current is produced by sources like batteries, solar panels, and fuel cells. Historically, it was the primary form of electricity distributed, with pioneers like Thomas Edison advocating for its use. However, AC's ability to be easily transformed to higher voltages for efficient long-distance transmission led to its widespread adoption for power grids.

Despite AC's dominance in grid infrastructure, DC remains crucial in many modern technologies. Electronic devices, such as computers, smartphones, and televisions, all rely on DC power to operate. This is why they typically contain power adapters that convert the AC from wall outlets into the DC required by their internal components. Electric vehicles also utilize DC power, both for their batteries and for their charging systems. Furthermore, specialized applications like electroplating and certain types of welding also employ direct current. The ongoing development of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems is also re-emphasizing DC's role in certain aspects of modern electricity infrastructure.
