The primary routes of transmission can be broadly categorized. Direct contact involves physical contact between an infected person and a susceptible individual, such as touching, kissing, or sexual contact. Droplet transmission occurs when respiratory droplets containing pathogens are expelled into the air during coughing, sneezing, or talking and are inhaled by a nearby person. Airborne transmission involves smaller particles that can remain suspended in the air for longer periods and travel greater distances.

Indirect transmission occurs when a susceptible host comes into contact with a contaminated intermediate object, known as a fomite. Examples include doorknobs, utensils, or bedding. Vector-borne transmission involves an intermediary living organism, typically an insect or arthropod like mosquitoes or ticks, that transmits the infectious agent from one host to another. Fecal-oral transmission is common for many gastrointestinal pathogens, where infectious agents in fecal matter contaminate food, water, or hands, which are then ingested.

Finally, vertical transmission occurs when an infection is passed from a mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Recognizing and targeting these various transmission routes through hygiene practices, vaccination, vector control, and safe food and water handling are fundamental public health strategies.
