tarbeliste
A tarbeliste is an individual who follows the teachings and methods of the Tarbell System, a home-study course on art instruction developed by H. R. Tarbell and published by the Reliance School of Art in Chicago, Illinois. The system, which became popular in the early 20th century, aimed to teach drawing and painting skills to aspiring artists through detailed lessons, reproductions of masterworks, and exercises. Tarbelistes would receive mailed materials and work through them independently, submitting their work for critique and guidance from the school.
The Tarbell System emphasized observational drawing, understanding form, light, and shadow, and the principles of composition.
