Tagasitõmbe refers to a method of starting an internal combustion engine by pulling a cord or lever. This action engages a mechanism that rotates the engine's crankshaft, initiating the combustion cycle. The cord is typically attached to a flywheel or a starter pulley, and when pulled, it unwinds a spring or draws a recoil mechanism. This stored energy is then transferred to the crankshaft.

The process involves several steps. First, the user pulls the tagasitõmbe cord. This action rotates the crankshaft and, through the timing belt or chain, the camshaft. As the crankshaft rotates, the piston moves down, creating a vacuum in the cylinder. Simultaneously, the intake valve opens, drawing the fuel-air mixture into the cylinder. When the piston reaches the bottom of its stroke, the intake valve closes, and the piston moves up, compressing the fuel-air mixture.

As the piston nears the top of its stroke, the spark plug ignites the compressed mixture. The resulting explosion forces the piston down, generating power. This downward motion also pushes the tagasitõmbe cord back into its housing. The momentum of the crankshaft then continues the cycle, with the exhaust valve opening to expel the burnt gases and the process repeating for subsequent combustion strokes. Tagasitõmbe is a common starting method for smaller engines, such as those found in lawnmowers, chainsaws, and some motorcycles.
