Tachykardiarytmissä refers to a group of heart rhythm disorders characterized by a heart rate that is too fast, specifically exceeding 100 beats per minute in adults at rest. These conditions arise from abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The rapid heart rate can originate in the upper chambers of the heart (atria), leading to supraventricular tachycardias (SVT), or in the lower chambers (ventricles), causing ventricular tachycardias (VT). Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter are common examples of supraventricular tachycardias. Ventricular tachycardia, if sustained, can be a life-threatening arrhythmia.

Symptoms of tachykardiarytmissä can vary widely depending on the specific type, duration, and the individual's overall health. Some individuals may experience no noticeable symptoms, while others may report palpitations, a racing heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, or even fainting (syncope). Prolonged or severe episodes can lead to reduced blood flow to the body's organs, potentially causing heart failure or stroke.

Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the heart's electrical activity. Holter monitors or event recorders may be used for longer-term monitoring if episodes are infrequent. Treatment aims to restore a normal heart rhythm and prevent future episodes. Options include medication, electrical cardioversion (a controlled electrical shock to reset the heart rhythm), or catheter ablation, a procedure that targets and destroys the small area of heart tissue causing the abnormal rhythm. Underlying causes, such as thyroid disease or electrolyte imbalances, are also addressed.
