Taajuusstandardoihin is a Finnish term referring to the group of reference frequencies and devices that define and maintain the frequency base used in measurement, timing, and communications. It is the allative plural form of taajuusstandardi, meaning “to the frequency standards.”

In metrology, frequency standards provide stable, repeatable references for measuring time and frequency. Primary standards realize the SI second, most notably through the hyperfine transition of cesium-133. Secondary standards, such as rubidium and hydrogen maser clocks, offer high stability for practical use. High-precision oscillators, including oven-controlled (OCXO) and temperature-compensated (TCXO) crystal oscillators, support dissemination and calibration tasks. Together, these standards enable accurate timekeeping, frequency dissemination, and synchronization across laboratories, networks, and systems.

Time scales such as International Atomic Time (TAI) and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) rely on large ensembles of clocks distributed worldwide. Frequency standards are used to discipline, compare, and calibrate clocks, ensuring traceability to the SI unit system. They underpin critical applications in telecommunications, navigation, science experiments, and data networks, where precise timing and stable frequencies are essential.

National metrology institutes and international bodies—such as the BIPM, NIST, PTB, and others—coordinate the realization, evaluation, and dissemination of taajuusstandardoihin.
