Frequency response types refer to how a system, such as an audio device or filter, amplifies or attenuates different frequencies. Understanding these types is crucial for manipulating sound and signals effectively.

One common type is a flat frequency response. This means the system reproduces all frequencies within a given range at the same level, without boosting or cutting any particular ones. This is often desired in high-fidelity audio reproduction to ensure the most accurate sound.

Another type is a boosted or cut frequency response. This is where certain frequencies are amplified or attenuated relative to others. Equalizers, for instance, allow users to selectively boost bass frequencies for a warmer sound or cut treble frequencies to reduce harshness.

Peak and dip responses describe specific adjustments. A peak occurs when a narrow band of frequencies is significantly amplified, while a dip signifies a narrow band of frequencies that is attenuated. These are often seen in room acoustics or speaker characteristics, where specific frequencies might be more prominent or less audible.

Shelving filters are another common type. A high-shelf filter boosts or cuts all frequencies above a certain point, while a low-shelf filter does the same for frequencies below a certain point. These are useful for broad adjustments to the high or low end of the audio spectrum.

Finally, filter types like low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass describe how frequencies are selectively allowed to pass through. A low-pass filter allows low frequencies to pass while attenuating high frequencies. A high-pass filter does the opposite. A band-pass filter allows only frequencies within a specific range to pass, attenuating frequencies both above and below that range. Each type serves a distinct purpose in signal processing and audio engineering.
