Smaller hydrocarbons tend to be gases at room temperature, while larger ones are liquids or solids. Hydrocarbons are typically nonpolar molecules, making them insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.

Hydrocarbons are a fundamental component of fossil fuels, including natural gas, petroleum, and coal, and are a major source of energy for human civilization. They are also used as raw materials in the petrochemical industry for the production of plastics, solvents, and many other chemical products. The combustion of hydrocarbons releases energy, which is harnessed for various purposes.
