Sünoviotsüüt refers to the inflammation of the synovial membrane, a thin layer of connective tissue that lines the inner surface of many joints. This membrane produces synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and reduces friction between the bones. When the synovial membrane becomes inflamed, it can lead to increased synovial fluid production, swelling, pain, and stiffness in the affected joint.

The causes of sünoviotsüüt are varied and can include infectious agents, autoimmune diseases, or trauma. Infectious sünoviotsüüt, also known as septic arthritis, occurs when bacteria, viruses, or fungi infect the joint. This is a medical emergency requiring prompt treatment to prevent joint damage. Autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can also trigger inflammation of the synovial membrane as the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis can cause secondary inflammation of the synovium due to cartilage wear and tear.

Symptoms of sünoviotsüüt typically include joint pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and limited range of motion. The severity of symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause and the specific joint affected.
