Sümmeetriarühmaks, more commonly known as a symmetry group, is a mathematical concept that describes the set of all transformations that leave an object unchanged. These transformations can include rotations, reflections, translations, and inversions. A symmetry group is a fundamental building block in various fields of mathematics and science, including geometry, group theory, crystallography, and quantum mechanics.

The concept of a symmetry group is built upon the idea of a group in abstract algebra. A group is a set of elements with an operation that satisfies certain properties: closure, associativity, identity element, and inverse element. In the context of symmetry, the elements are the symmetry operations, and the operation is the composition of these operations (performing one transformation after another). The set of all symmetry operations of an object forms a group, hence the name "symmetry group."

For example, a square has a symmetry group consisting of four rotations (0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees) and four reflections (across horizontal, vertical, and two diagonal axes). These eight operations, when combined, form the symmetry group of the square, which is known as the dihedral group D4. The order of the symmetry group (the number of elements in it) reflects the degree of symmetry of the object. Objects with higher symmetry will have larger symmetry groups. Understanding the symmetry group of an object can reveal significant information about its structure and properties.
