A søgemaskine, or search engine, is a software system designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. When a user enters a query, typically keywords, into a search engine, the engine scans its index of web pages and returns a list of results that are considered most relevant to the query. The process involves several stages: crawling, indexing, and ranking.

Crawling is the discovery process where software robots, known as crawlers or spiders, systematically browse the web, following links from one page to another. They gather information about the content of these pages.

Indexing is the next step, where the gathered information is organized and stored in a massive database. This index is essentially a searchable catalog of web content, allowing for quick retrieval.

Ranking determines the order in which search results are presented. Algorithms analyze various factors, such as keywords in the query, the relevance of the content on a page, the authority of the website, and user engagement signals, to rank pages from most to least relevant. Popular examples of search engines include Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. Search engines are fundamental tools for navigating the vast amount of information available online, enabling users to find websites, images, videos, news, and other digital content.
