Säästölamppu, also known as a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), is a type of fluorescent lamp designed to replace incandescent light bulbs. It uses a similar principle of exciting mercury vapor with electricity to produce ultraviolet light, which then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb to emit visible light. The main advantage of säästölamppus over traditional incandescent bulbs is their significantly higher energy efficiency. They consume considerably less electricity to produce the same amount of light, leading to reduced energy bills and a lower carbon footprint.

Säästölamppus have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs, typically lasting between 8,000 and 15,000 hours, compared to the 1,000-hour lifespan of an incandescent bulb. This longevity further contributes to cost savings and reduces the frequency of bulb replacements. They are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and color temperatures, allowing users to choose the most suitable option for different lighting needs and environments.

Despite their advantages, säästölamppus do contain a small amount of mercury, which requires careful disposal. Many municipalities offer recycling programs for these lamps to ensure the mercury is handled safely. Early models of säästölamppus sometimes had issues with slow warm-up times and color rendering, but modern versions have largely overcome these limitations, offering instant-on capabilities and improved light quality.
