Säteilylämmitykset, also known as radiant heating, refers to systems that transfer heat through electromagnetic radiation. Unlike convection heating, which warms the air that then circulates around a room, radiant heating directly warms surfaces and objects in its path. This direct transfer of energy creates a feeling of warmth that is often described as more comfortable and even than air-based heating.

The primary mechanism behind radiant heating is the emission and absorption of infrared radiation. Warm objects emit infrared radiation, and when this radiation strikes cooler objects, it is absorbed, increasing their temperature. This is similar to how the sun's rays warm the earth. In a radiant heating system, a heat source, such as a boiler or electric element, heats a medium (like water or a resistive wire) that is embedded within or placed on surfaces like floors, walls, or ceilings. These warmed surfaces then emit infrared radiation into the space.

Common applications of radiant heating include underfloor heating systems, where heating pipes or cables are installed beneath the floor covering. Radiant panels, often mounted on walls or ceilings, are another form of radiant heating. The benefits of radiant heating include improved comfort due to even temperature distribution, reduced air circulation which can be beneficial for allergy sufferers, and potential energy efficiency gains as it can maintain comfort at slightly lower air temperatures compared to convection systems. The initial installation cost can sometimes be higher than traditional heating methods.
