It applies to all stages of an electrical system’s life—from design and installation to operation and maintenance—and aims to reduce hazards such as electric shock, arc flash, burns, and electrical fires.

Common hazards include live parts, exposed conductors, faulty insulation, wet environments, and improper use of equipment. Uncontrolled energization, equipment failure, and human error can lead to serious injuries or fatalities.

Key safety practices include de-energizing sources before work, applying lockout/tagout procedures, and verifying zero energy with appropriate testing. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves, dielectric footwear, and face shields, along with the use of insulated tools and proper barriers, are essential. Maintaining safe clearances from live parts and using ground-fault protection where available also reduce risk. Regular inspection, maintenance, and training are required to keep conditions safe.

Standards and regulations guide electrical safety in workplaces and public spaces. Notable examples include the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and NFPA 70E in the United States, IEC 60364 internationally, and country-specific regulations such as OSHA provisions. In residential settings, simple measures like GFCI outlets, proper outlet spacing, and avoiding water near electrical devices are important.

Safety culture emphasizes planning, permits for high-risk work, supervision for trainees, and rapid response to incidents. For non-professionals, electrical work should be performed by qualified electricians.
