Sähködialyysi, also known as electrodialysis, is an electrochemical separation process used to separate ions from a solution. It utilizes a semipermeable membrane and an electric potential difference to drive the movement of charged particles. The process typically involves a stack of alternating cation-exchange and anion-exchange membranes separated by spacers. Electrolyte solution flows through the channels formed by these membranes.

When an electric field is applied across the stack, cations migrate towards the cathode and anions migrate towards the anode. Cation-exchange membranes allow cations to pass through but block anions, while anion-exchange membranes allow anions to pass through but block cations. This selective transport leads to the concentration of ions in some channels and their depletion in others.

It also finds use in the food industry for demineralization of whey, fruit juices, and sugar solutions.
