Színlátás refers to the ability of an organism to perceive color. In humans, this ability is primarily mediated by specialized photoreceptor cells in the retina called cones. There are typically three types of cones, each sensitive to different wavelengths of light: red, green, and blue. The brain then interprets the signals from these cones to create the perception of a vast spectrum of colors.

The process begins when light enters the eye and stimulates the photoreceptors. Different colors of light stimulate these cones to varying degrees. For instance, red light primarily stimulates red cones, while yellow light stimulates both red and green cones. The relative stimulation of these cone types is then transmitted as neural signals to the brain's visual cortex, where they are processed to produce our subjective experience of color.

Variations in color perception can arise from genetic differences in cone types or their functioning. Color blindness, or more accurately, color vision deficiency, is a condition where an individual has difficulty distinguishing certain colors. The most common forms involve reduced sensitivity to red or green wavelengths. Other less common deficiencies affect blue-green perception or result in a complete absence of color vision (achromatopsia). The development of color vision is a complex biological process influenced by genetics and environmental factors.
