Színhmérséklet, often translated as "color temperature," is a characteristic of visible light. It describes the perceived hue of light emitted by an incandescent object. When an object is heated, it begins to glow, and the color of that glow changes with the temperature. At lower temperatures, the object appears reddish, while at higher temperatures, it shifts through orange, yellow, white, and eventually blue.

In practical applications, color temperature is used to describe the color of light sources, such as lamps. It is measured in Kelvin (K). A lower Kelvin value indicates warmer, more reddish light, typically found in incandescent bulbs. Higher Kelvin values indicate cooler, more bluish light, often seen in fluorescent or LED lighting. For example, a typical incandescent bulb might have a color temperature of around 2700K, while daylight is around 5500K to 6500K.

Understanding color temperature is important in photography, videography, and interior design. It helps in selecting the appropriate lighting to achieve a desired mood or to accurately render colors. For instance, in photography, if the light source has a different color temperature than what the camera is set to, it can result in an unnatural color cast in the image. White balance settings on cameras are used to correct for these color temperature differences. The concept applies to both natural and artificial light sources.
