Szélerózió is the process by which wind erodes and transports soil and rock particles. It is a significant geomorphic process that can shape landscapes, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, as well as along coastlines and in areas with loose, unconsolidated surface materials. The effectiveness of wind erosion depends on several factors, including wind velocity, the size and condition of the soil particles, and the presence or absence of vegetation cover.

Wind erosion occurs through three primary mechanisms: deflation, abrasion, and saltation. Deflation involves the lifting and removal of fine particles like silt and clay from the soil surface by the wind, leading to the formation of depressions and pavement-like surfaces. Abrasion occurs when wind-blown particles, such as sand grains, strike and wear away exposed rock surfaces, creating smoothed or pitted features. Saltation is the most significant transport mechanism, where sand-sized particles are lifted a short distance by the wind, bounce along the surface, and then fall back down, dislodging other particles in the process.

The consequences of widespread wind erosion can be severe. It leads to the loss of fertile topsoil, reducing agricultural productivity and potentially causing desertification. The dust and sand particles transported by wind can also travel long distances, impacting air quality, human health, and infrastructure. Controlling wind erosion often involves measures like planting windbreaks, implementing conservation tillage practices, and managing grazing to maintain adequate vegetation cover.
