Szemérzékelés, often translated as visual perception, is the complex cognitive process by which organisms recognize and interpret visual stimuli. It involves the eyes capturing light and converting it into neural signals, which are then transmitted to the brain for processing. This process allows us to see shapes, colors, depth, and motion, and to understand our surroundings.

The initial stage of szemérzékelés occurs in the retina, where photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) respond to light. Rods are responsible for vision in low light conditions, while cones detect color and fine detail in brighter light. These cells convert light energy into electrical impulses that are sent to the brain via the optic nerve.

Further processing takes place in various areas of the brain, including the visual cortex. Here, the raw data from the eyes is organized and interpreted. The brain identifies patterns, recognizes objects, and constructs a coherent representation of the visual world. This involves distinguishing foreground from background, understanding spatial relationships, and inferring meaning from what is seen. Factors such as attention, memory, and prior experience significantly influence how visual information is perceived and understood. Dysfunctions in any part of this system can lead to various visual impairments or perceptual disorders.
