Syvämeri, also known as the deep sea, refers to the region of the ocean that lies beyond the continental shelf and is typically deeper than 200 meters. This area constitutes the majority of the ocean's volume and is characterized by extreme conditions, including high pressure, low temperature, and near-absolute darkness. The deep sea is home to a diverse array of unique and often poorly understood ecosystems, many of which are adapted to survive in the absence of sunlight.

The deep sea is divided into several zones based on depth and environmental conditions.
