Syntetáza is a general term for enzymes that catalyze the synthesis of larger molecules from smaller precursor molecules. These enzymes are crucial for a wide range of biological processes, including the construction of complex carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. The term "synthetase" is often used interchangeably with "ligase" when referring to enzymes that form new chemical bonds by consuming ATP or other nucleotide triphosphates.

Syntetáza enzymes typically operate by activating one of the precursor molecules, making it more reactive, and then facilitating its addition to another molecule. This process often involves the formation of high-energy intermediates. For example, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are essential for protein synthesis. They attach the correct amino acid to its corresponding transfer RNA (tRNA) molecule, a process that requires ATP hydrolysis.

Another important class of synthetases includes fatty acid synthetases, which are multi-enzyme complexes responsible for the de novo synthesis of fatty acids. These enzymes sequentially add two-carbon units derived from acetyl-CoA to a growing fatty acid chain. The energy for these synthetic reactions is usually supplied by the hydrolysis of ATP or other nucleoside triphosphates, highlighting the energetic demands of building complex biomolecules.
