Synsets, short for synonym sets, are the fundamental units of meaning in many lexical databases, most notably WordNet. A synset represents a single sense of a word by grouping together all the lemmas that share that sense. Each synset is labeled with a part of speech and paired with a concise definition, or gloss, plus example sentences that illustrate its usage.

Structure and contents: A synset contains one or more lemmas, which are the word forms that can express the sense within that synset. Although members of a synset are related as synonyms, they are not always interchangeable in every context; they reflect overlapping meanings that occur in actual language use. The gloss provides a human-readable definition, and the associated examples help clarify the sense.

Relations: Synsets are interconnected through semantic relations that form a large lexical network. Common relations include hypernymy and hyponymy (is-a relationships, forming a hierarchy), meronymy and holonymy (part-whole relationships), and various associative links. Adjectives and verbs may also have cross-cutting relations such as antonymy. This network structure supports semantic reasoning and tasks that require understanding word meaning beyond a single form.

Uses and significance: Synsets underpin many natural language processing tasks, including word sense disambiguation, semantic similarity measurement, information retrieval, and ontology construction. WordNet and its synset structure have influenced many multilingual and domain-specific lexical resources, helping computer systems interpret and relate ideas expressed in language.
