Sväljningsvägarna, often translated as swallowing pathways or deglutition pathways, refers to the complex neurological and muscular processes involved in moving food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. This intricate process is crucial for nutrition and preventing aspiration, the entry of foreign material into the airway.

The act of swallowing can be divided into three main phases: oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal. The oral phase is voluntary and involves chewing food or manipulating liquid in the mouth, forming a bolus, and propelling it towards the back of the throat. The pharyngeal phase is largely involuntary and rapid. It involves the closure of the airway (larynx and trachea) by the epiglottis and vocal cords, while the pharyngeal muscles contract to move the bolus down the pharynx. Simultaneously, the soft palate elevates to block the nasal cavity. Finally, the esophageal phase is also involuntary. The bolus enters the esophagus, and peristalsis, wave-like muscular contractions, transports it down to the stomach.

Disruptions to these pathways can lead to dysphagia, a condition characterized by difficulty swallowing. Dysphagia can result from various causes, including neurological disorders like stroke, Parkinson's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as structural issues in the mouth, throat, or esophagus, or age-related changes. Symptoms can range from coughing or choking during meals to a sensation of food getting stuck, pain, or weight loss. Assessment and management of dysphagia often involve speech-language pathologists and medical professionals to ensure safe and effective swallowing.
