SurfaceOne is a term used in materials science to describe a class of engineered surface layers or coatings intended to modify properties at a material’s interface, such as friction, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. The term is employed by multiple groups and vendors to designate both a specific coating and a family of related surface treatments with similar aims.

Coatings labeled SurfaceOne typically combine ceramic or ceramic-like components with organic or metallic binders. Common chemistries include nitrides, oxides, carbides, and ceramic–polymer hybrids. They are deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD), or solution-based processes, producing layers ranging from tens of nanometers to a few micrometers. The coatings are designed for good adhesion, controlled residual stress, and compatibility with diverse substrates, with performance tuned by doping and microstructure.

Performance and applications. SurfaceOne coatings aim to lower the coefficient of friction, increase hardness, and improve wear and corrosion resistance under challenging environments. They are used in aerospace components, cutting tools, medical implants, power electronics, and consumer devices, where extended service life or reduced maintenance is valuable. Variants may emphasize thermal stability, biocompatibility, or radiation resistance, depending on the intended application.

Evaluation and development. Development emphasizes adhesion, thermal expansion matching, and scalability. Evaluation typically includes tribology tests, scratch and pull-off adhesion tests, corrosion testing, and substrate-performance assessments to ensure coating integrity during service.
