Surfacegrowing refers to a phenomenon or process where biological organisms, or other entities, primarily increase their size or complexity by adding material to their external surfaces. This is in contrast to internal growth, where an organism expands from within.

In biology, many organisms exhibit surfacegrowing. For example, plants grow by adding new cells to their outer layers, such as the epidermis and vascular tissues, and by extending existing structures like leaves and roots outwards. Fungi often grow by extending hyphae, which are thread-like structures, at their tips, effectively adding to their surface area. Corals build their calcium carbonate skeletons on their existing structures, a form of surfacegrowing. Some bacteria and other microorganisms also form biofilms, which are essentially communities of cells adhering to a surface and growing outwards.

In urban development, the expansion of cities across available land can be described as surfacegrowing, where new infrastructure and buildings are added to the periphery.
