A surface front is a boundary between two air masses of different temperatures and densities. These air masses do not mix readily, and the boundary zone where they meet is called a front. When a front is located at or near the Earth's surface, it is referred to as a surface front. Surface fronts are key features in weather systems, influencing temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation patterns.

There are four main types of surface fronts: cold fronts, warm fronts, stationary fronts, and occluded fronts. A cold front occurs when a colder air mass advances and replaces a warmer air mass. This often leads to rapid temperature drops, strong winds, and the development of cumulonimbus clouds, which can produce thunderstorms and heavy precipitation. A warm front forms when a warmer air mass advances and replaces a colder air mass. This typically results in a gradual warming trend, widespread cloudiness, and light to moderate precipitation that can persist for extended periods.

A stationary front is a boundary where the movement of air masses has stalled, with neither the warm nor cold air mass advancing significantly. These fronts can cause prolonged periods of cloudiness and precipitation over a region. An occluded front forms when a cold front overtakes a warm front, lifting the warm air mass completely off the ground. Occluded fronts are often associated with complex weather patterns, combining characteristics of both cold and warm fronts. The passage of a surface front is typically accompanied by a shift in wind direction and speed, as well as changes in atmospheric pressure.
