Superpositioni is a term used in several languages for the concept of superposition. In English, the corresponding concept is called superposition. The term describes the additive combination of effects, states, or quantities in systems that respond linearly.

In physics and engineering, the law of superposition states that the response caused by two or more stimuli is the sum of the responses that would have been caused by each stimulus individually. This applies to linear systems such as many mechanical, electrical, and optical problems. It underpins techniques like Fourier analysis, network theory, and vibration analysis.

In wave physics, superposition explains interference. When waves overlap, their amplitudes add pointwise, producing constructive or destructive interference. This principle is central to acoustics, optics, seismology, and radio communications.

In quantum mechanics, the superposition principle states that a quantum state can be expressed as a linear combination of basis states. The system evolves deterministically, but measurement yields probabilistic outcomes, with the coefficients giving probabilities after squaring amplitudes.

In geology, the law of superposition states that in an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, younger layers overlie older ones, allowing relative dating.
