Superposition, in physics, refers to the principle that for all linear systems, the net response caused by two or more stimuli is the sum of the responses that would have been caused by each stimulus individually. This means that if a system can respond to stimulus A with response X, and to stimulus B with response Y, then when subjected to both A and B simultaneously, the system will respond with X + Y.

This principle is fundamental to many areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics. In quantum mechanics, superposition takes on a more profound meaning. A quantum system, such as an electron, can exist in multiple states simultaneously. For instance, an electron can have its spin up and spin down at the same time. The superposition principle simplifies the analysis of complex systems by allowing problems to be broken down into simpler, individual components. Each component's effect is calculated independently and then summed to find the total effect. In electrical circuits, voltages and currents can also be analyzed using superposition if the circuit components are linear.
