Supernovarjähdykset, often referred to as supernovae, are powerful and luminous stellar explosions. They represent the final evolutionary stage of certain types of stars. These events are incredibly energetic, briefly outshining entire galaxies and releasing vast amounts of energy and matter into interstellar space. There are two main types of supernovae. Type I supernovae occur in binary star systems where a white dwarf star accretes material from its companion. When the white dwarf reaches a critical mass, it undergoes a runaway nuclear fusion reaction, leading to an explosion. Type II supernovae, on the other hand, are the result of the core collapse of massive stars. When a star much larger than our Sun exhausts its nuclear fuel, its core can no longer support itself against gravity, and it collapses catastrophically.
