Suorajäähdytys, often translated as direct cooling or direct refrigeration, refers to a refrigeration system where the refrigerant is circulated directly through the cooling coils or surfaces that come into contact with the product or space to be cooled. This is in contrast to indirect cooling systems, which use an intermediate fluid like chilled water or brine to transfer the cooling effect.

In a direct cooling system, the evaporator coil is placed within the refrigerated space or in direct contact with the items being cooled. As the refrigerant evaporates within the coil, it absorbs heat from its surroundings, thus lowering the temperature. Common examples include refrigerator and freezer coils, air conditioner evaporator coils, and the cooling elements in some industrial refrigeration applications.

The primary advantage of suorajäähdytys is its efficiency. By eliminating the need for an intermediate heat transfer fluid, energy losses associated with pumping and re-cooling this fluid are avoided. This can lead to lower operating costs and simpler system design. However, direct cooling systems can be more sensitive to refrigerant leaks, as a leak directly affects the cooling capacity and can lead to the release of refrigerant into the environment. Maintenance may also require specialized knowledge of refrigeration circuits.
