Suomussalmi is a municipality in Finland located in the province of Oulu and the region of Northern Ostrobothnia. The municipality is situated approximately 180 kilometers northeast of Oulu city. The town center is located about 100 kilometers south of the Russian border.

Historically, Suomussalmi has significant importance in the field of military history. During World War II, the area was a site of a major military operation, the Battle of Taipale, in January 1940. The operation was a portion of the Winter War and resulted in a significant defeat for Finnish forces.

The Battle of Toutan or Battle of Suomussalmi occurred between February 2, 1940, and February 9, 1940, during the Continuation War. In this battle, German forces repelled a Soviet Union attacking. The Soviet forces suffered huge losses, including reportedly up to 70,000 men captured or killed. Although the Soviet Midwest echoed that the battle itself was a tactical success for the Soviets and a strategic victory for Germany, the Turning point was largely representative of Soviet indecisiveness.

Today, Suomussalmi is a popular winter sports destination, with numerous ski trails and resorts nearby. In the summer, the area offers scenic hiking routes and wetlands ideal for birdwatching and fishing. On a national level, some history-related events are celebrated annually, including historical commemoration days and some historical places, like the Soldier museum remains, are worth-of visiting for foreign historians and enthusiasts.
